Here's another look at the Team Canada jersey for the Totally WWII concept project. A commenter suggested removing the circle and just use the leaf. I'm not sure I like the look of this version, but since I decided to do a little design by committee on this jersey, I wanted to post this version of it for your thoughts.
-----
It's the worst kept secret in hockey, but there's an announcement from Fenway Park scheduled today (Wednesday) for 2pm. Obviously we're talking about the next Winter Classic and most likely the team that will play the Bruins will be the Flyers.
UPDATED: Pretty obvious by this photo that the Flyers will face the Bruins in the WC.
UPDATE: Here's the 2010 Winter Classic logo. I like it. I'll have a Winter Classic logo comparison post later this week.
What are your thoughts on this year's WC logo?

definately use the jersey with the gold incorporated, all the ones with the gold look great.

How about replicating the stars on the shoulders of the USA jerseys a bit with the leafs? I can't put my finger on it, but there is some "it factor" lacking in the jersey so far.
Wish I could come up with something better for you to try.

And the world responded with a giant "meh." This Team Canada jersey is really a major challenge

No wonder Team Canada has had so many jersey designs over the years. There's no consensus on what makes a great Canadian jersey!

I'm sure it's just the typographer in me, but that Copperplate just reminds me too much of the late 90's Team Canada. A maritime WWII era appropriate font can be difficult-- we're far into the Modernist movement, and the post-war clean Swiss style (Helvetica) hasn't appeared yet. At that point in time the Art Deco feel (think Joel Shuster Superman) is long gone-- so what do you go with? Tough call... for me it's the typography that is a bit off.
Otherwise I think the R-W-B works. I'd probably go with a straight filled path for leaf, no stroke. Perhaps a number in the leaf? Front numbers were a lot more common before the 50's.
It's interesting how everyone, Johnny included, has something in their mind that this jersey doesn't quite fulfill... and yet no one can really say what it is.
Also dug the green Russian sweater. One of those ugly-yet-awesome color schemes.

Those are some good comments, Six Zero.
The typography is a bit of an issue here for me. The Copperplate was my starting point, and so far, you're the only one to comment on it (from what I remember).
I think I may revisit that aspect of the jersey and perhaps it will spark some obvious changes to the jersey - or tie it all together.

I love SZ's put a number in the leaf idea!

And yes, a number in the leaf sounds like a great idea. I will definitely be showing a version of that. My concentration now will be towards finding the right typeface.

I've got it...

I'm looking for something more web 2.0

Ok, this may be completely off the wall, but how about the shield from the Canadian Coat of Arms? At that time the flag of Canada was the Red Ensign with the (British) Union flag in canton and the Coat of Arms of Canada defacing the flag. Remember at that point the Maple Leaves were green and there were THREE of them. Maybe changing the modern single leaf to three connected by a stem would make it look right?
Using the three stemmed leaves (in red or green) would allow you to put "Canada" underneath the logo in a downward arch. I'm curious to see how that would play out...
Looking at the old flags and the COA, I have to say the gold is necessary! Blue makes sense too. Of course red goes without saying...

Is this still a Torch Creative design for the Winter Classic? I love the design.
Posted by: Erik D. | July 15, 2009 at 02:28 PM
Erik, I believe that it is. I've had some discussions with a few agencies about a feature on here, but they couldn't talk about anything that had to do with the NHL. The NHL is pretty strict on that kinda stuff it seemed. I'm pretty sure Torch Creative mentioned they were working on the WC logo.

Awesome. Thanks. I'm based here in Dallas and am a big fan of their work.

Definately work on the one with white, the gold doesn't work. I'd put the circle around the leaf back because it makes it feel more like the period you're going for. Experiment with the three leaves idea for sure and play with fonts and see what you get.

I'm going to keep the gold as the alternate/third jersey. The primary jerseys will be the white/home and red/away. I do like the the leaf in the circle myself, but I do like the idea of the number in a leaf. I think that only works on the leaf alone.

Instead of having a red leaf on a red jersey, use a white one, as well I think the logo is too high up, the 'canada' looks like its where a 'c' or an 'a' would go.

I just started sketching out a new crest that will incorporate some elements of the Coat Of Arms. It looks pretty cool. Once that illustration is finished, I'll post it here and have people vote on which crest they like most.

I prefer the red, white and blue Canada's jersey. And I personaly think that you shoul keep the circle around the leaf.
