First off, thanks to Ryne and J.D. Smith for emailing me the links to this little story. I'd have commented on it in depth, but my band played a rare Tuesday night show as a favor, and updating anything on the web with my Blackberry Storm is like shoveling shit with a toothpick.
Chris from Icethetics has a nice blog post on the Mallards, so be sure to check it out over there.
I'll be blogging about it on Wednesday and should be up in time for the lunch-time visitors, but it'll be a much different slant. The second I saw the logo I knew it was time for action. Stay tuned!
UPDATE:
So, I don't want to make a totally big deal out of this. I mean, after all, it's still just some minor league hockey team, so this is to be expected.
What is this, you ask? It's the mascot. Somehow, something annoying always involves a mascot.
In this case it's a duck - a mallard duck to be precise. There are some things in hockey, and I guess all of sports, that I'll never understand: Using a wimpy animal as your mascot.
There are so many options that teams have, but there's always that idiot in the boardroom who has the bright idea of using a wimpy team mascot in a tough sport. Just because it has a scowl, or is biting a stick in half, doesn't make it an ass-kicker. One kick to the head and a mallard duck is down for the count.
But, why stop here? The train to siss-ville has some extra stops if teams wanna go there.
How about the Kansas City Kittens, or the Columbus Cuddle Bunnies? Give them a ferocious look, some fangs, a demolished hockey stick and you're good to go.

Haven't you guys seen the Mighty Ducks, if you mess with one you have to mess with the whole flock.

haha, Ryne. Perhaps I should watch the movie before I start running my mouth about ducks!

Not sure why it started, but they have had that name for many years. They changed to the Quad City Flames when they got the feeder team for Calgary.

You really need to.
Or you could just watch this.

I thinks its a great name and great logos. It's not like they up an said ducks, they used mallards. It is an angry logo. I personally think this is one of the better logos in the minors. I cant wait to see the jerseys. If your honestly putting down the team name then there is something wrong. I think the mighty ducks intermission speech tells that all, its about pride in your team no matter what.

I'm certainly not going to be inspired by a movie called The Mighty Ducks, by an actor named Emilio Estevez.
Having said that, you can still have pride in your team and hate the name and mascot.
What's wrong with not liking a team name/mascot?
What if the team was called the "Farts" and your mascot was a pile of poop with legs and one eye?
I'm obviously going to extremes to make a point, but you catch my drift. (pun intended).

I get your point Johnny, Its not really about the name so much as it is the team.
That being said this is a Hockey Design website.
And Mallards is kinda a lame name.

I gotcha, however i think mallards isnt a horrible name, i think they did a very good job on the logos(with the given name that is).
Posted by: Nick May | July 02, 2009 at 11:59 PM
well that's the thing. is that name set in stone? was it forced on them? but, hey, it's just me. i have a thing against quacky mascots.
