Now that the Anaheim Ducks Re-branding Competition is just about over and done with, it's time to move on to the next design contest: The Original Six Re-branding Competition.
The idea is to completely re-brand all Original Six teams, one at a time.
I ran a poll last week to see which team most needs a total re-branding, and the Toronto Maple Leafs edged out the New York Rangers by two votes (79-77).
The Toronto Maple Leafs are your team, designers. View the rules below and get to work!
Toronto Maple Leafs Re-Branding Competition Rules:
Note: This is a re-branding competition, not a jersey tweak competition.
1. Team
name: You may change the team name or keep "Maple Leafs". The team is
still based in Toronto. City name may not change. If you decide to change the team name, a very brief explanation as to why is required.
2. Team colors: Your choice.
3. You may not use any of the Maple Leafs primary or secondary logos, nor any of their past logos. You may not "Frankenstein" any of the previous/current logos to cobble some "new" design together.
UPDATE: To be clear, you are allowed to use an actual maple leaf image. I just don't want a slight redesign of any past Maple Leafs logos. If it's close, I'll put your design up for a vote. So play it safe!
4. Create a Home and Away concept.
5. Third jersey design is not required, but if you wanna create one, have at it.
6. Submission deadline is Friday, February 12th.
7. I reserve the right to change the rules on the fly in case I have overlooked something!
8. SIGN YOUR WORK!
Technical info:
When submitting your artwork, remember that the width of my blog content area is 470 pixels. So, if your presentation is wide, when I reduce it to 470 pixels, your logo/jersey images may appear smaller than you'd like. Take a look at the Ducks submissions for a good idea on how best to layout your presentation.

Do the Toronto Arenas or St. Pats count in the "Frankenstein" category?

If it looks like any of these, I'm gonna reject the design:

Ok so if I'm using a leaf in my design I'll play it safe with something like the Canadian flags maple leaf. I think I'm going to do a Toronto St. Pats concept though, as if they never changed their name. I have a good idea for it kind of playing off of the ideas of the Maple Leafs jerseys that came after the name change.

My idea (and sketches) are pretty far from what the Maple Leafs would ever consider using. Also, it will probably be a better minor league logo, but I don't care! I've had the idea for awhile for a logo and wanna do it anyway - mostly just to bone up on my sport logo design skills.

I actually just came up with the idea for doing a St. Pats concept when looking up the logo history of the Leafs and decided to go with my idea that's pretty simple and might have been used had the team never changed its name. I do plan on having a throwback inspired third also that might be similar to one of the st. pats actual jerseys, but not the same.

I'm thinking about a Leaf with big teeth biting a hockey stick and half!
What do you all think?
Posted by: Matt | January 25, 2010 at 05:24 PM
ooops... i mean... "biting a hockey stick IN half"
Posted by: Matt | January 25, 2010 at 05:26 PM
That sounds like a winner, Matt!

Hi Griswold,
Thanks for the heads-up about the 470px layout. But I can't seem to fit any of my ideas into that format.
Is it just my imagination... wasn't it possible to click and enlarge images on some previous posts? I'm just throwing an idea out there: since this site is dedicated to hockey art, wouldn't it be great to see stuff in the size the artist intended?

Untvar,
Server space and bandwidth are always issues when operating a website. Also time... meaning I don't have that much free time.
SO, a solution would be for you (and any other artist) to create a Photobucket account. You can store your larger images there. When I post your 470px version, I can create a link (that you provide me) that points to your gallery - or specific large image.
Make sense?

Thanks, that works for me.

Im sure this has been said before, but I would have to be blown away by something that wasn't blue and white. After being blue and white for 70+ years, how do you change it now?

Rob, you're so right. I've been preaching to people to think outside the box, but there's no problem with keeping blue and white.
You don't go changing the color scheme willy nilly after 70 years. I think some minor tweaking would work for the colors. Adding a third color for example.
