Sorry Capitals fans, but you're not getting a third jersey any time soon. That's a bummer for you and a bummer for us third jersey/logo fans. It's always fun to speculate on what teams may introduce as their third. Would it be a new jersey style, keeping the primary logo unchanged? Or would they do something crazy, like a relatively new team introducing a "retro" design.
Owner's Corner with Ted Leonsis (Capitals majority owner) is a video feature over on the Capitals website, hosted by Mike Vogel. The host asked Ted Leonsis a fan-submitted question about the possibility of a third jersey for the Caps. Here's his response:
"There's no active discussion, there's no work on it. We introduced new jerseys a couple years ago. The fan-base was not supportive of that. I mean, I got some e-mails before, and immediately after - some of them I've saved. My favorite from one of our message board posters was 'How dare you!? This looks like a colostomy bag!' And I just remembered - I kept that one - I keep an occasional e-mail here or there. And now our - I think - our logo and color scheme are amongst the most accepted, and certainly best selling and best looking in the league. And so, sometimes injecting change is difficult. I don't feel the compelling need to have the third jersey. I also think it's unfair sometimes to introduce a third jersey because people wanna then go out and buy them, and with the economy being the way it is, I just thought it would be - it would look greedy on our part. So, ya know, at some point when it feels right, and maybe the fan-base gives us permission to do that, we'll certainly do it, but now didn't seem like the right time."
What do you Capitals fans think about that? Do you admire Ted Leonsis for not wanting to go for the easy (greedy) money?
If he can justify high ticket prices, high concession prices, high parking prices and high Reebok Edge jersey prices, I can't see why adding a third jersey would be a big deal. If people can't afford them, they won't buy one. Simple.
Maybe Ted Leonsis doesn't want to introduce Colostomy Bag 2! I wonder which jersey he was talking about there...
(Thanks to all who sent this in)

'How dare you!? This looks like a colostomy bag!'
Is this referring to the eagle jersey? I actually liked that one & owned the blue one. Or the Capitol building hemorrhaging stars?
I am 100% in favor of upgrading the shoulder patch to the primary spot. Either on the current jerseys or at least on a third. I would buy that. I will not buy a wordmark jersey.

What is up with Semin? I see that expression on his face all the time... I'm not really sure what is going on with it.

@Adam -
Normally I despise wordmark jerseys, but the Caps really have a nice one. (that's what she said)

@johnny
I agree 100% about the wordmarks. For the Caps it just works - not sure if it the connection to their original look from when I was a kid (and a fan) or not though.
I will take it a step further and say I am also not normally a fan of the EDGE jerseys either. In fact I despise almost all of them that have any vertical stripes or apron strings - Nashville, Edmonton, Colorado etc... I like the Caps though.
Overall the Caps are a look that exceeds the sum of the parts. Wordmark, don't like. Empaled eagle, don't like. Edge design, don't like. Complete look, like very much.

Third jersey's a no-brainer; Same template, use blue as the primary color, and throw the alternate logo on the front and the wordmark on the sleeves. I'm no Caps fan, but it works for me.
