The
map above is your Country/Region guide. Use it to determine which
country and region you would like to create a hockey team for. Pick a region, create a name, and design a logo/jersey that best describes the region you selected. Your presentation design should include a logo, a jersey, your name (for credit), and an optional (brief) bio of your new team. The bio would be a good place to explain your design and naming choices. (Here's an example of a good presentation)
Rules:
1. The Canada Vs USA design competition is open to all designers.
2. Naming. This is an "open naming" project. All that is needed in your presentation design is the country/region listing. You're free to decide your own team name. No city representation. You're free to get creative with your naming, however, it should be a name based off of the country/region that you pick, not one particular city.
3. Logo/Jersey. Primary logo and one jersey design are all that's required for entry. Alternate logos, wordmarks and third jerseys are not required. (However, if you think it helps your chances at voting time, have at it, Hoss.) It's also up to you if you want to create a home and away jersey set. But, again, only one jersey is required.
4. Sizing. All of the designs will be placed in a dedicated Canada Vs USA design album here on PuckDrawn. It will look much like the Griffins Contest album. Your designs should not exceed 800px in width.
5. Text. When setting the text for the bio of your team in your presentation graphic, be mindful of text size. Small text is hard to read, especially if I feature your design on the front page of the blog where the width is only 470 pixels.
6. Submissions. Submit as many designs as you like. There are no limits on entries, nor is there a limit on the amount of regions you want to pick. If you've got the time, we've got the beer.
7. Credit. Be sure to include your name or pseudonym in your design.
8. Kickoff. The official kickoff for this project is August 1st, 2009.
9. Deadline. The deadline for entries is December 18th, 2009.
10. Voting. The voting will be a two-pronged system for this project:
2.) My personal favorites, along with the fan voting results — and the discussion that follows all of the entries — will be what determines the winner. Ultimately, I decide the winners so that there's a little suspense and excitement added to Winter Classic Day.
11. Winners. The winners will be unveiled during the upcoming Winter Classic at Fenway. Third place will be unveiled just before first period puck drop. Second place will be unveiled just before the start of the second period. First place will be unveiled just before the start of the third period.

I'm move Oklahoma to the Gulf, Mississippi, Kentucky, and West Virginia (Virginias need to go together) to the South. And I think Southern Ontario should be smaller and not include Ottawa in it. Just how I see the regions different from this, but those tiny details don't really matter.

Actually, considering the fact that West Virginia was formed in order to split from Virginia because the Appalachian population of Virgina did not support slavery and wanted to fight with the Union rather than the Confederacy, I think the people of West VA would much rather be with the Atlantic division than the South.

Kentuckians (if that is that a word) definitely consider themselves southerners, so that might not be a bad idea. However Oklahoma has much more in common with the prairie states than the gulf states, so that's fine as is.
I know its been explained before, but why was Ontario split into two? Are they very different culturally?
If you wanted to cut it down to just 7 regions a piece, for Canada you could put Ontario together. Then for the US, put Texas into the Southwest, California into the Pacific Northwest (just call it Pacific), Montana in with the frontier states, Minnesota in with the Mid-West states (then you could call it "Great Lakes"), and Kentucky and the remaining Gulf States in the South.
Finally, if you wanted to make a distinction between the Canada Atlantic and the U.S. Atlantic, that region in the U.S. is often called the "Mid-Atlantic" and I believe that are in Canada is call the "Maritimes."

Honestly I just see everything below Pennsylvania as being southeast and it just seems like WV should be in the south to me because my cousins that live there totally talk with southern accents. I think southern and northern ontario are different, southern is a whole bunch of cities, and northern is sort of like the prairies I guess.

I also always thought Utah was more like a Frontier state being similar to Colorado rather than the southwest.

I would definitely agree with you about Utah. However, a lot of people in the deep South would have trouble accepting West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware as "the South." West Virginia I suppose you could make an argument for, but the culture is much closer to Western Pennsylvania than it is the actual state of VA. The culture of states in the Appalachian Mountains is different than of the South.

Koho, I agree with the split of Ontario (like you do) due to cities in the South and wilderness in the North but for the record Nothern Ontario is nothing like the prairies. It's more of a giant forest that's actually very hilly. Just in case any of you are designing sweaters for that team, do not think "prairie" for an instant. Think moose, lakes, and a million pine/maple trees.

Question, are you going to post the entries as they come in or wait till a few weeks before the vote?

When I said "like the prairies" I meant that they both don't have that city culture like most the other canadian regions have, nothing about climate and geography. I would just move Utah to the frontier and Mississippi and Kentucky to the south. I've definitely always seen West Virginia being more 'southern' than Virginia, I would just put Virginia and West Virginia in the same region whether it be Atlantic or South.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Schooners I like this logo for a team in Atlantic Canada, it was a team that was supposed to play in the CFL.

Sorry I haven't responded in awhile. Been on the road with the band and my phone's web browser sucks a giant ass...
Here are some responses to questions/comments:
1. Regions. I'm going to stick with the region breakdowns as they are now. It's impossible to get a consensus in them, so I'm just gonna leave them.
2. Entries. I will be posting them on the front page of the blog AND in the contest photo album as they come in. It wouldn't be very fun if you didn't see anything for months.
3. Atlantic Canada. That's a swell logo.

As a Marylander, I'm happy to finally be lumped in with the PA/NJ/NY...Can you send Gary Bettman this breakdown? (get the Caps back in the old Patrick Div!)
We always seem to get lumped with the Carolinas...and I don't think that on the whole that's the best match.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer that Maryland be part of the PA/NJ/NY region.
