Could the NHL be getting a little less blue and trendy soon?
According to a Twitter post [#CBJ's Rick Nash on benching third jerseys: "I'm sure if you look at the stats (0-4 record) you can make an easy assumption."] and a story on the Columbus Dispatch website, the Blue Jackets may be ditching their alternate jerseys.
Here's the story from the Dispatch:
The Blue Jackets were scheduled to wear their new third jerseys last night, the ones that have netted them an 0-4 record. Cynics might suggest coach Scott Arniel had the club don its regular blue sweaters for superstitious reasons.
But after the Jackets earned a 3-1 win over the New York Rangers, Arniel offered an explanation that would have satisfied the judging panel of Project Runway.
"You know what," he said unable to suppress a grin. "I just thought our red pants against their red pants would really look cool."
Of course, it had nothing to do with the fact the Jackets had been outscored 18-5 in their cannon-clad, navy-blue duds.
"Did it fall on me?" Arniel said. "I think there are a few fans around the city" that were thinking the same thing.
The players tried keeping a straight face as media members asked them who made the decision. Equipment manager Tim LeRoy deadpanned: "It's my fault, I forgot to put (the third jerseys) out."
The Jackets had planned to wear the alternate sweaters 15 times, but the original schedule has been removed from the club's website.
Prior to last night's game, a team spokesman said the Jackets would sport them on Saturday against Dallas.
If the alternate jersey schedule has been removed from the Blue Jackets' website, that's a pretty good indicator that the Blue Jackets are scrapping them. Didn't the Penguins do the same sort of superstitious thing after they were losing a bunch of games in their baby blue Winter Classic alternates?
Let this be a lesson to any team thinking of unveiling a retro circle logo in the future!
