From the Vancouver Sun, here's an awesome and interesting story on a guy named Thor, who has created a display at the Olympics featuring a reproduction of a dozen classic hockey sweaters from British Columbia, Canada and the U.S. Pacific Northwest. [Press Release]

Thor also went and trademarked the Vancouver Millionaires name and logo, and started creating jerseys, t-shirts and hats. You can see those items here.

PuckDaddy has a cool article on the Top 20 best-selling NHL jerseys. Looking at the list, there really aren't any surprises. Typical popularity/talent contest. I personally think there needs to be a "Griswold - 00" on that list somewhere.

Sunday Quick Hits - 1.31.10

I figure I'd take a break from all of the Maple Leafs Re-branding Competition submissions and get some other stuff in this spot.

Here's a pic of Semyon Varlamov's new goalie mask. I don't usually get into the goalie mask art around here because my love of masks is not what it once was after the "Jason" style masks faded away. But still, there are some really fancy designs on masks these days.

UPDATE: I originally found the above photo on the SportsLogos.net forum (posted by rockngoalie1), which I forgot to mention when I posted this earlier. Credit to JapersRink for reminding me! I always try to give a "HT" (Hat Tip) or credit to where I found a photo or news source. Sometimes I just forget, so don't be afraid to call me out or remind me via email or twitter!

Normally I don't pull random concept designs from the SportsLogos.net forums, but since I'm a huge Flyers fan, this one was worth the conversation. It's a concept logo, designed in a way to better show the "P" that seems to be hard for people to spot until it's pointed out. I think the Flyers logo is untouchable, which is why I have not - and probably never will - design a Flyers concept logo.

Toronto Maple Leafs Need A New Look

I know this guy is really looking forward to getting rid of the current Leafs logo, but all I can do here at PuckDrawn is have a friendly little design competition to see who can come up with a spectacular new Leafs logo/uni concept design.

 

If you hadn't noticed, on the right sidebar I had a poll to see which Original Six team you readers thought could use a total overhaul.

With 233 votes, the Leafs edged out the Rangers by two votes (79-77) and will be the lucky team that gets rebranded.

Since the Anaheim Ducks Rebranding Competition has another week left for designers to submit their concepts, I'll hold off on the official rules and dates for the Leafs competition.

Consider this a head's up.

 

Speaking of the Ducks Rebranding Competition, me and a couple other designers will be updating our submissions, so be on the look out for some logo tweaking. One thing I like about these competitions is the feedback/critiques and then seeing what the designer comes up with in their revisions.

 

I will be launching a new sports logo/design website in about a week, so if you're interested in getting a sneak peek as I'm working out the kinks and setting stuff up, shoot me an email.

I know this isn't hockey related, but I'm a sucker for sports concept designs. Over on UniWatch there's this Design-A-Wildcat feature underway. Pretty cool stuff.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are known for their rabid following. “Rider Nation” is known for following their team to road games in western Canada, dressing entirely in green, and (you couldn’t make this up) carving watermelons to wear as helmets or lingerie. Also remember that, for the World Junior hockey championships coming up in Saskatoon and Regina next spring, Team Canada is wearing a special green jersey to honour Saskatchewan fans and the Roughriders. Calgary has a large population of Saskatchewan expats and Regina is only 7 hours away by car, so the city was full of green, the stands at McMahon were full of green, and the city was actually sold out of watermelon last week.

I'm diggin' that gal in the watermelon "lingerie", but not the green Team Canada jersey so much... But at least it's not for some "Going Green" movement.

Here's the 2010 NHL Draft logo. I really like it. Simple, clean, and bold. However, there should be some damn purple and gold in this design!
